Invisalign Myths Debunked: What Patients Often Get Wrong
Invisalign is a modern treatment for mild-moderate dental issues. In this technique, clear and removable aligners are used to put constant pressure on teeth to align them properly. Every great thing comes with a few myths, and Invisalign is no exception. These myths prevent patients from choosing this treatment.
Is Invisalign Limited to Minor Cosmetic Fixes?
No, modern Invisalign treatment is not limited to minor cosmetic fixes. It uses a modern approach to solve underbites, overbites, and significant misalignments. Attachments, precision cuts, or elastic bands are utilized for complex cases. Attachments are tooth-colored resin buttons that are attached to the specific teeth to put extra pressure on them. Precision cuts are tiny notches that are made in the aligner to attach elastic bands. These elastics apply continuous pressure to align the lower and upper jaw. The suitability of the aligners is determined using 3D scans and X-rays. The orthodontist evaluates the problem and prepares a treatment plan. Modern software is used to preview the precise moment of teeth and the final results.
Can Invisalign Really Be Completely Pain-Free?
The Invisalign treatment is not completely pain-free, yet it is more comfortable compared to traditional braces. The patient feels pressure, mild soreness, and speech changes in the first few days. The pain lasts for 2-3 days, and the speech changes can be overcome with loud speaking and repeating words. After 2-3 weeks, the patient is shifted to a new set of aligners, in which this process of pain repeats. Aligner chewies or cold compressors are used to manage this discomfort. The most effective method of shifting to a new aligner set is to wear it before bed.
Does Invisalign Always Work Faster Than Traditional Braces?
The speed of the treatment varies with complexity, bone response, and patient compliance. Teenagers' bones are in a developmental stage and respond to pressure earlier compared to adults. Their bones are dense and require proper time to move to the intended position. In mild-moderate cases, the Invisalign treatment works better in a shorter period compared to wires and brackets. Complex cases require a similar time as braces do. Patient compliance is the key to faster results in this treatment.
Can a Patient Eat or Drink Anything While Wearing Invisalign Aligners?
Patients are advised to remove their aligners before eating or drinking anything other than water. Hot beverages like tea, coffee, or hot chocolate can warp the plastic. It modifies the structure of the aligners, which changes the pressure on teeth. Colored drinks or acidic foods can cause staining on the clear aligners, making them more prominent. It defeats its real purpose of discrete treatment. The acidic foods trap under the aligners and provide a proper environment for bacterial growth. Hard or chewy foods also damage the aligners. These foods can create scratches or cracks on the aligners, which also leads to bacterial growth.
Does Invisalign Require Little to No Maintenance?
No, it’s a myth that the Invisalign aligners need no care. A patient wears it for 20-22 hours a day, and they need proper cleaning and maintenance to prevent bacterial or plaque buildup. It is recommended to clean them using an anti-bacterial soap and lukewarm water after having a meal. The aligners are deep-cleaned with a soft-bristle brush and with Invisalign cleaning crystals. These crystals are mixed in water, and the aligners are placed in this water for 15 minutes. Harsh toothpaste or hot water is avoided in this process for safety.
Are Regular Orthodontist Visits Unnecessary with Invisalign?
Regular check-ups are needed to track the performance of the treatment and make necessary changes in the plan accordingly. The orthodontist manually checks whether the teeth are tracking well or not. In case the treatment doesn’t progress as planned, attachments or elastics help guide the teeth back on track. A 3D scan is obtained to prepare a new set of aligners in case of a serious issue. The orthodontist ensures that the aligner is fitting properly or recommends using chewies for better final results.
Are Invisalign Results Only Temporary?
The Invisalign treatment results are permanent, similar to traditional braces, with the proper use of retainers. After treatment, retainers are necessary to maintain the achieved results. In the first weeks orthodontist advises to put them for 20-22 hours. Over time, the routine changes to nighttime use only. These retainers are of two types: fixed and removable retainers(Hawley retainers and Vivera retainers). Prefer following the retention advice of the orthodontist for prolonged results.
Is Invisalign Really More Expensive Than Braces?
The total cost of the Invisalign treatment varies with the complexity of the case, the expertise of the dentist, and the location. Mild to moderate cases are solved in a shorter time period compared to severe cases. Additional attachments or accessories also change the price of the treatment. The number of orthodontists who offer payment plans to split the total amount into pieces for the ease of the patient. It reduces the costs of frequent visits like braces in whihc the patient visits to tighten the braces' wires. Its removable design allows better oral hygiene, reducing the chances of cavities and gum problems.
